Mark Holterman started life on the humble setting of a Wisconsin farm, learning work ethic from the family construction business (Facebooks). Attending Yale University, he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Biology. Earning the National Institute of Health scholarship, Mark Holterman found himself in a combined M.D. and Ph.D. program at the University of Virginia, where he found his love not only in pediatric surgery, but also his future wife (also a pediatric surgeon). Dr. Mark Holterman graduated in 1988, got married, and eventually had three sons.
After moving to work in various hospitals, he finally landed permanently at the University of Illinois-Chicago. In 2012, Dr. Mark Holterman co-founded and became the CEO of, Mariam Global Health, a corporation that works to fund and develop ideas that could help with advancements in global health.
Dr. Mark Holterman’s main interests are autoimmunity, obesity, and stem-cell medicine. Because of these interests, along with others, he is a supporter of the American Diabetes Association and co-founded the Hannah Sunshine Foundation, a non-profit that seeks out children suffering from chronic and rare disease getting them access to regenerative treatments starting on the cellular level. In October, 2014 Dr. Mark Holterman also co-founded and became the first CEO of Alliance for the Advancement of Cellular Therapies. This is a non-profit organization dedicated to the ethical, expeditious and efficient advancement of cell therapy into the clinical armament of physicians in the US and internationally.
Dr. Mark Holterman believes in constant learning and likes studying information outside his box of knowledge to see other medical trends.
